Android widget not updating? Find the real cause

Check source data, permissions, connectivity and background restrictions before you delete anything.

Quick answer

When a widget stops refreshing, check the original source first. A task that was never saved, a calendar account with no new events and a weather service with stale readings are different problems. Confirm the expected value in the source, check any required permission or network access and then inspect background restrictions if updates fail only when the phone is idle. Do not clear local data as your first troubleshooting step.

Start with the source

A widget can only display new information if its source has changed and the app successfully delivers an update. Open the source app or settings and check whether the expected data is current. A task count can remain unchanged because the task was never saved; weather can remain old because the provider has not returned a new reading.

Narrow the problem step by step

  1. Note the last known update and the type of content that is stale.
  2. Confirm your phone has the network connection that source requires.
  3. Check source-specific permissions for calendar, media or health data.
  4. Open the widget app once and inspect any refresh or error message.
  5. Review Android battery/background settings if updates stop only after the phone sits idle.
  6. Try the app's supported refresh action if one is available.

Don't force-stop and clear app storage repeatedly. Those actions can disrupt scheduling and risk losing local designs. If you must reinstall, protect documents using an export process that you have verified first.

Expect different refresh speeds

A current-time widget, battery indicator and weather forecast may have different update strategies. Android limits unattended background activity to protect battery life, and a provider can impose rate limits too. A value that is a few minutes old is not the same fault as a widget that has never connected.

Read Android's background work overview and our update-frequency explanation. When the panel is blank rather than stale, start with blank widget troubleshooting.

Identify the update that is missing

Different failures need different fixes. A frozen number suggests the app has not refreshed its content. A blank panel can indicate failed rendering or unavailable data. A clock that shows an old time only while the phone is asleep can involve a different system path from a weather forecast that has not fetched an update in hours.

Try writing down the expected value and the last value displayed. For tasks and habits, change one item in the source app and check whether the widget follows. For calendar, create or find a non-sensitive test event inside the relevant view. For remote sources, confirm that the network service returns fresh data before modifying the widget.

When battery restrictions are relevant

Android schedules background work under system limits that vary by version, device state and app implementation. A regular background job is not a promise of second-by-second precision. Doze and battery-saving modes can delay work; a launcher may also limit how often it displays changes.

Review the widget app's battery setting only after you prove that its updates stop while the phone sits idle. Some devices offer Optimized, Restricted or Unrestricted options. These names and their behavior are not consistent everywhere. An unrestricted setting can increase battery use, and it is not a general cure for expired credentials or failed provider requests.

When the widget uses online data

Check the connection and the external source separately. A custom HTTPS feed may fail because the provider changed its response, a token expired or the selected URL no longer works. A weather service may update less frequently than you expect. For privacy reasons, never include authentication tokens or full private URLs in screenshots sent to support.

An online template download and a live data refresh are also separate operations. Successfully importing a visual design does not prove its connected data source is configured.

A useful bug report

Provide the Android version, phone model, launcher, affected widget type, a safe example of the expected content, when you last saw a correct update and whether opening the main app refreshes it. Explain whether the problem appears on Wi-Fi, mobile data, or both. Avoid a factory reset or data clear until your saved designs have a verified backup.

For source-specific help use calendar shows no events, widget battery drain and background update frequency. Android's persistent task scheduling guide describes system mechanisms, not a universal refresh-time guarantee.
