Quick answer
A 'Loading' message means the widget is present but has not finished showing its content. First open the providing app, check whether the displayed data is available and try a simple static widget from the same app. If static content appears while live content does not, focus on permissions, account setup and connectivity. Protect saved designs before reinstalling or clearing data.
First identify what the loading message belongs to
A widget saying Loading, showing a spinner, or displaying an empty placeholder can mean several things. The app might still be preparing its first layout, fetching information from a network service, or waiting for permission to read calendar or other data. The widget's surface may load even though the information it needs has not arrived.
Do not treat every loading state as a system failure. Make a note of the app name and what content should appear. Then open that app normally. If the app itself shows a sign-in requirement, an error or missing information, address that first.
Compare static and live content
Try a simple widget that can show a fixed label or clock without fetching an online account. If static content appears while a weather or synced calendar widget remains on Loading, focus on its source connection rather than your launcher grid.
Check that your phone has internet access if the widget requires it. A browser working on Wi-Fi does not prove the app's service or account is healthy, so open the provider app and verify the actual account or data source there.
If content is sensitive, inspect the widget's permission settings rather than granting every permission the app requests. Our permissions guide explains why a widget's visual presence and access to personal data are separate questions.
Test whether the launcher is part of the problem
Place another basic widget from a different app on a spare home-screen page. If both freeze or fail to display, look at your launcher or Android version. If only the original widget is affected, stay with its settings and provider.
For a failed live update, see widget not updating. If the area is empty rather than showing a loading status, start with blank widget troubleshooting.
Finish with non-destructive checks
- Confirm the widget app opens and its source content is available.
- Check the relevant sign-in, network connection and permissions.
- Return home and wait for the next normal update opportunity.
- Try removing only the home-screen placement and adding it again after confirming saved designs are safe.
- Check trusted app and system updates if the issue began after an update.
Avoid clearing storage or reinstalling before you have found out whether designs are kept locally. Android limits some background activity; the official guidance on widget background updates is useful context, but it does not identify a single app's root cause.
