Quick answer
Health-related numbers in a template may be only design examples. A real fitness widget needs a compatible source, the relevant permission and a clear understanding of which measurements are available.
A fitness preview is not a live measurement
A template showing steps or an activity ring may use example values so the design looks complete. That does not mean your phone already has a compatible data source. Live fitness values depend on the selected source, its records, permission state and when the widget refreshes.
Health Connect availability differs by device and Android setup. A fitness connection needs explicit approval to read the relevant category of data. Do not assume every wearable or tracking app automatically syncs into the same place, or that the widget can show every metric.
Try it on your home screen
- Check whether the chosen widget supports Health Connect or another specific data provider.
- Look at the underlying app to confirm the measurement exists and is recent.
- Grant only the activity or health categories needed for the chosen display.
- Test one non-sensitive example reading and compare its units and date with the source.
Check the source in order
First confirm your activity app actually has recent records. Then verify that your device has a compatible Health Connect setup. Review the specific permissions granted to the widget app. Finally, compare the timestamp or date of a displayed value with the source app.
If the source app shows steps but the widget is blank, the issue may be permissions, sync, source selection or refresh timing. Repeatedly adding identical widgets does not solve an absent connection.
Design for interpretation, not diagnosis
A step count or progress circle can be motivating, but it is not medical advice or a measure of personal health. Label whether a value represents today, this week or an arbitrary goal. Keep older data visibly distinct from current data when the component supports a timestamp.
Learn general permission basics in widget permissions, then use stale widget troubleshooting if the numbers stop changing.
Check the result
Health data may come from different devices and can be delayed, duplicated or missing, depending on synchronization. A step total is not a medical diagnosis. Before sharing home-screen screenshots, check that personal fitness measurements are not visible to others.
Common question: Why does a fitness widget show a blank value?
The source may not contain that measurement, permission may be denied, or the app may not support the connection. Check those before trying to change the design.
