Quick answer
A calendar widget that lists events may need access to a specific calendar account. A widget showing only the current date generally does not need permission to read your private schedule.
Date display is not event access
A widget showing “Tuesday, 27 October” can use device date information. A widget that lists meeting titles or times may need permission to read a calendar. These are different purposes; don't assume a calendar permission is required for every clock or date design.
Before granting access, decide what you want the home screen to reveal. A large upcoming-event title can be useful when you work alone but unsuitable if other people regularly see your screen. A time-only reminder or generic “Next event” label may be a better choice if your widget supports that layout.
Try it on your home screen
- Determine whether the widget is expected to show a date, upcoming event or month calendar.
- Open the source calendar app and check that the intended account and events are visible.
- Grant only the permission connected to the feature you chose.
- Create a harmless test event and check whether the widget displays the correct title and time.
Test a predictable event
Create or select a non-sensitive appointment and see whether it appears after the widget's supported refresh. If it doesn't, verify the correct calendar is selected, the permission is still granted and the event is inside the widget's displayed time range. Time-zone changes can also affect which day a midnight event belongs to.
Revisit permission choices
Use Android's application permission settings to review access. Revoking a calendar permission can leave an existing widget without data; that is expected and should not be confused with a broken visual design. Check the source connection rather than deleting the canvas.
WidgetCraft's calendar integration is an optional advanced source, not a requirement for basic widgets. For a layout that avoids personal information entirely, see date widget ideas.
Check the result
When the source app can see the event but the widget cannot, check calendar selection, event filters and refresh timing before requesting more permission. Think about privacy too: a meeting title on an unlocked home screen may be visible to someone looking at your phone.
Common question: Should I enable calendar access for a decorative clock?
No calendar permission is normally needed to display local time. A clock with upcoming-meeting features has different requirements; check the app's explanation.
