WidgetCraft is made by the team behind this website. We list it first as our own widget builder, explain its limits, and link to competing apps when they are a better fit. This comparison uses publicly described features, not independent hands-on testing.
Choose the type of transparency you need
A transparent widget can mean a clock without a solid card behind it, a photograph with transparent PNG edges, or an invisible touch target that leaves a space on your launcher. These are different tasks. Before downloading several apps, decide whether you want visible information over wallpaper or an entirely blank area.
Our first choice is WidgetCraft for designing a carefully placed transparent-looking composition. For ready-made transparency controls, look at Something OS Widgets or DIGI Clock Widget. For images, Photo Widget Easy gives more direct photo-shape tools.
1. WidgetCraft — best for controlling a custom layout
WidgetCraft: Widget Maker is our widget builder and works best if you want to arrange the text and artwork yourself. Its editor supports layered designs, so you can pursue a light, open layout rather than fill the entire widget area with content. The appearance of transparent backgrounds and layers must be checked against the current release and your launcher.
The benefit is controlling spacing and hierarchy instead of being locked to one preset. The disadvantage is that it requires design work. Check the app's Google Play listing for current availability and features, which have not been independently verified for public release.
2. Something OS Widgets — best for preset transparent utilities
Something OS Widgets advertises transparent widget backgrounds, adjustable opacity, resizable layouts and custom colors. Its options span clocks, calendar information, battery and other widgets, so it may be enough for several parts of your home screen.
This is an especially straightforward choice if the collection already has a clock or utility design you like. You remain within the styles provided by the app.
3. DIGI Clock Widget — best for a transparent digital clock
DIGI Clock Widget has specific transparency controls in its listing: its background opacity can be adjusted from transparent to opaque. You can also customize time and date colors, fonts and several widget sizes.
Choose it when your only requirement is a digital clock that floats over a wallpaper. A single-purpose clock app is often easier than creating the same layout from scratch in a general widget editor.
4. Photo Widget Easy — best for PNG images and custom cropping
Photo Widget Easy supports photos, different shapes, crop controls and PNG images, including transparent artwork according to its listing. It is the relevant alternative when you want a portrait, logo or illustration instead of a time or data display.
A transparent image is not the same as a fully transparent widget surface. Inspect the crop and edge behavior after placing the widget. If the original artwork has no alpha channel, the background cannot simply disappear.
A note about completely invisible widgets
The open-source Transparent Widget on F-Droid is designed for blank space and optional double-tap actions. That is a different use case from making a beautiful clock. Consider it only if you intentionally want a visually empty launcher position.
For regular widgets, maintain readable contrast against changing wallpapers. Test on your actual home screen and follow our contrast guide. If the background seems wrong after changing launchers, use widget-after-launcher-change troubleshooting.
Our recommendation: start with WidgetCraft for a personal layout, DIGI for a transparent clock, Something OS for a themed pack and Photo Widget Easy for transparent images.
