Editorial disclosure

WidgetCraft is made by the team behind this website. We list it first as our own widget builder, explain its limits, and link to competing apps when they are a better fit. This comparison uses publicly described features, not independent hands-on testing.

What to look for

An app folder widget is meant to launch other apps from a compact surface. That is more than a graphic containing several app icons. On many launchers, dragging one app over another already creates a folder with no additional app required. A separate widget is useful when you want different icons, a larger layout or a themed container.

1. WidgetCraft — design a custom shortcut-themed panel

WidgetCraft: Widget Maker is our own Android widget editor. WidgetCraft can arrange icons, labels and shapes in a clean tile. It has been developing guided actions and widget taps, but reliable opening of arbitrary third-party apps must be verified per supported action in the installed version. A drawn icon alone is not a usable launcher shortcut. Check its public Google Play listing for availability and exact capabilities.

2. IconStash: App Folder Widget — a dedicated app-launching folder

IconStash: App Folder Widget is an alternative for this particular need. IconStash: App Folder Widget is built around displaying several app shortcuts within one widget and launching them. Its listing describes size choices and Material You coloration. It is a more direct fit than using a general design canvas for app navigation.

3. OneUI Widgets — folders within a themed widget suite

OneUI Widgets is an alternative for this particular need. OneUI Widgets advertises app-launcher and related utility widgets in a large Samsung-inspired package. It can be useful if you want folders coordinated with the rest of your clock and system widgets. Check the exact tap behavior and app selection options.

4. KWGT Kustom Widget Maker — advanced custom touch actions

KWGT Kustom Widget Maker is an alternative for this particular need. KWGT supports configurable touch actions and creative arrangements. It is suitable for technical users who want a completely custom icon layout. You should test opening each target app and understand the setup before using it as a replacement for standard folders.

An arrangement that works on the home screen

Use a square or wide widget with a maximum of four or six clearly labeled icons. Small unlabeled marks may look stylish but increase errors when you are moving quickly. Keep enough gap between tappable areas so the intended app opens. A simple native launcher folder may still be the fastest option.

Test functionality before relying on it

Tap every shortcut after you add the widget, and repeat after a launcher update or app rename. If a shortcut cannot find the target app, reconfigure the action instead of recreating the entire home screen. Some devices restrict direct toggles for settings even when launching apps works normally.

Our practical recommendation

WidgetCraft is first for visual design exploration, IconStash is best aligned with functional app folders, OneUI Widgets supplies themed choices, and KWGT allows detailed touch layouts.
