Android widget sizes explained: 2×2, 4×1 and beyond

Understand launcher grid cells, not fixed pixels, when planning widget shapes.

Quick answer

A 2×2 or 4×2 widget size means launcher grid cells, not a fixed number of pixels. Two phones using the same grid label can display different widths because of launcher spacing, display density and margins.

Grid numbers are not physical dimensions

“2×2” typically describes how many home-screen columns and rows a widget occupies. The real size depends on the launcher grid, display density, margins and device. A 2×2 layout on one phone may leave less usable area than a similar label on another phone.

Think in shapes: square for a centered photo or ring, wide for a clock or task row, tall for a portrait or checklist. Pick the useful shape first; the numeric grid label is only a placement guide.

Try it on your home screen

  1. Open the widget picker by long-pressing empty home-screen space.
  2. Find the sizes available for that specific widget; a label in an editor may not match your launcher's options.
  3. Count adjacent free grid cells before placing it, and test the smallest layout first.
  4. Check whether the longest text value fits after placement, not only in the preview.

Check the minimum size

Some widgets cannot shrink below the space their provider requests. Others support resizing only horizontally or vertically. When a handle refuses to move, free more cells and test the permitted direction. Do not assume a launcher feature exists on every device just because Android supports resizable widgets in general.

Preview realistic content

A three-digit percentage, long weekday and two-line task are useful stress tests. A widget that only fits “9:00” or a short English date may fail with other values. Leave margin for the launcher itself.

Android explains these differences in its app widget overview. If the launcher provides handles but nothing changes, follow widget won't resize for a more focused diagnosis.

Check the result

If placement fails, clear adjacent cells or choose an empty home-screen page. Resize handles are optional and depend on the widget and launcher. Changing the overall launcher grid may rearrange your app icons, so note the original grid setting before changing it.

Common question: Does 4×2 always measure twice the pixels of 2×2?

It spans twice the number of launcher columns. Pixel measurements depend on grid spacing and the device, so design for the installed size rather than a universal width.
